Our Son Will

My first memory is of taking my first steps, not far from Tonquin Valley. Family and friends crowded into Mount Edith Cavell Chalet, the big log teahouse Grandad had built in 1928-29. In late August of 1952, we were celebrating his 47th birthday.

He loved to dance to the old Victrola. I sat on my wudgy diapered bum on the floor, looking up at adult legs, big as trees, having such fun. I really wanted to join them. I had learned to crawl a few months before, but I seldom did. I wanted to move the way real people did, not this clunky baby way. I liked to pull myself up using chairs, then cling to their backside dowels. I remember looking at adult's great wide bottoms from seat height, with my chubby hands wrapped tight around the rungs.

To join the big people dancing, I had to figure out how to get my floppy, stubborn little body coordinated. I crawled to the middle of the floor - I don't remember this - then I got up and tried to dance midst a shuffling forest of grownups. I can still see their feet as big as boats and legs as big as trees going up and up.

Everyone made quite a fuss, which an aunt thought was completely overdone. They'd spoil me for sure, but I couldn't have cared less. I got such a buzz from my newfound ability that, to this day, my greatest joy is helping others learn new physical skills - no tools, no technology, just a body that works for them. To hear a kara-te student exclaim, "I can do it! I can do it!" is as good as life gets.

Over the decades, though, I've learned that this early success - up and walking without crawling the requisite time - isn't always smart in the big world. People want to see credentials. They want to see the full, slow progress before they'll accept any further abilities.

We're taught that our personal disasters come from dysfunctions and bad behaviours. Some of them, I think, come from our earliest successes geting hardwired into our brains, so we try variations of these wonderful, good moves in situations and with people that really don't work.

I crawl now, when required, as well as walk, run, and dance .... I'd love to fly on my own, but I'm still figuring that one out.
