Brenda Guiled (rhymes with wild) was born and raised in the Canadian Rockies, finished high school in the British Columbia Interior, and by age 20, completed a B.Sc. in Honours Zoology at UBC. She studied ecology-ethology, hoping to learn how we might change our behaviours to live sustainably on Earth.

She worked as an environmental educator, including co-authoring a public-school program that won first prize among all North American provinces and states. She completed an M.Sc. (Education) at SFU, part of her desire, since age 10, to answer the question, “What does it take to be a good teacher?”

She's published a variety of non-fiction and fiction books, for adults and kids. As a graphic artist, she's best known for technical illustrations of fishes and shellfishes, often credited as B. Guild Gillespie. As a community volunteer, she's published all sorts of written materials and graphic arts.

She’s lived in Greece, Norway, and Nova Scotia. In early 1995, while living in Metro Vancouver, B.C., she joined the Lower Mainland Okinawa Goju-Ryu Shorei-Kan Karate Association, graduating to instructor by late 1997. From 2002 to present, she’s run the Salt Spring Island Shorei-Kan Karate School that she founded.

The answer to the best teaching method is also one that offers hope of living sustainably on the planet. It’s the Okinawan kara-te way of life, minding harmony and justice, staying in good health, and developing a sure-fire tap to joy that serves well an Earth-conscious lifestyle.

Kids are the world.
Nature is everything.
Not too much of anything,
except good health and joy.
